Search Workshop
Workshop Overview
It's estimated that more than 350 million English language Web searches are conducted every day! Web searching is now the second most widely used Internet operation after e-mail and is a critical task/skill required for using today's Web be it for e-commerce, education/research, on-the-job, or just plain Web-surfing for fun. Surprisingly, most Web searchers really don’t know how to optimize their search requests and are therefore usually forced to “wade through” multiple pages of search responses.
Search engines are the market makers of the Internet.
They connect consumers with providers at the very moment of consumer interest and enable all of us to find exactly what we want, when we want it. Therefore providers of Web services need to make sure that “searchers” are able to efficiently and effectively identify their services amidst all others on the Web.
This two-day workshop will provide attendees with the knowledge and skill to effectively “search and be searched” on the Web. “Searchers” will learn the key elements of formulating and optimizing their search requests. Web service and content providers will learn what they must do in order to achieve high search rankings and increase the probability of being found by the “searchers.” Specific topics will include:
Searching:
- How to select terms and search (more) effectively;
- How different search engines interpret queries;
- How to meaningfully interpret search results;
- How to invoke search operators (aka advanced operators), even undocumented ones;
- How to evaluate search engines and search aggregators;
- How to recognize the differences between local/internal searches and global/Internet searches.
Being Searched:
- How to appeal to and influence search engine indexers;
- How to avoid search engine indexer "turn-offs;"
- How to focus and control Web site indexing;
- How to circumvent search engine indexing through site submission services;
- How search engine paid and unpaid placement/relevance works;
- How to implement "search-ability" as a content management issue.
Prerequisites
Attendees to this workshop should have a fundamental understanding of Web design, development, and publishing technologies. A knowledge of network technologies and Web server operation would be useful but is not required.cost

Speakers & Bio's

Prof. Bebo White is a Departmental Associate (retired) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), the national high energy physics laboratory at Stanford University. His work focusses on the development and implementation of computing resources to support international physics collaborations, in particular the aBar experiment at SLAC.
This work includes research into Web technologies, high performance computing, Grid computing, and physics event visualization. In addition, Prof. White holds faculty appointments at Hong Kong University, the University of San Francisco, and Contra Costa College.
Prof. White's interest in the Web dates from 1989 when he was on sabbatical at CERN. Upon his return to the U.S., he was a member of the team that developed the first Web site in the Western Hemisphere at SLAC. He is the author of five books and numerous technical articles on both physics and a wide range of computing topics. He is a frequent speaker at conferences, academic institutions, and for commercial organizations around the world. Prof. White has been a member of the International World Wide Web Conference Committee (IW3C2) since 1996 and in that time has served as General Co-Chair of two of the conferences and Tutorial and Workshops Co-Chair for four of the conferences. White is often found on the program committees of the international conferences on Web Technology. He is one of the managing editors of "The Journal of Web Engineering" and "The Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching."
In recognition of his work, Prof. White has been added to the Micro Times 100 list of those making outstanding contributions to personal computing and cited by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as having made significant contributions to the development of WWW. He has also been elected a member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) and elected a Fellow of the World Wide Web Institute. Prof. White also serves as a Advisory Board Member of the WOW organization.
