Last month, I told you about our “long, strange trip” over the last seven years or so since WOW’s birth. Now, it’s time to talk about the future.

WOW, like the Web profession in general, is growing up. Growing pains not withstanding, thanks to your support, we have accomplished a lot, and more is on the way. Some exciting things are in the works, and I will announce them in the newsletter as soon as they are in place.

iPod screens go all-color

Apple Computer has switched to color screens for all its standard iPods and has updated its iTunes software to let people more easily download podcasts.

The move, which combines Apple's iPod and iPod Photo lines, means that black-and-white screens are now found only on iPod Minis

The new 60GB iPod can store 25,000 digital photos or 15,000 songs, while the new 20GB version can hold 20,000 photos or 5,000 songs. The company released a new 20GB iPod U2 Special Edition with a color screen as well.

Google mapping enters the third dimension

Google has launched its new mapping service that uses local search and satellite images to give users a three-dimensional view of buildings and terrain.

Google Earth, announced Tuesday, uses technology from the company's Keyhole division, a satellite mapping service it bought in October. The software for the service can be downloaded free from the search giant's Web site.

The non-profit professional association World Organization of Webmasters is stepping up its emphasis on education by spearheading the creation of a national standard for Web professional education and training.

WOW, http://www.webprofessionals.org, which has published skill standards and has offered courses leading to industry certification for Web professionals since its inception in 1997, has formed a committee made up of business people, educators and Web professionals to develop a model curricula program that will allow students from high schools, community colleges and universities to move from one institution and take their credits with them.
