Letter from the Executive Editor

By Bill Cullifer

"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."
-- Martin Luther King Jr.

For many of those devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, taking the first step toward rebuilding their lives will be difficult. They are the ones being poked on all sides by those pointing fingers and trying to place blame. And while accountability is important so we can be sure of an adequate response next time, we will leave that to others.

For our part, we here at WOW wanted to do something to help. Not being one of the richer organizations, we decided that the best we can do is to assist those in our field. To that end, we have created a new section in the Forum, http://www.webprofessionals.org/forum/default.asp titled “Help for Web professionals affected by Katrina.” This category contains two subcategories, one for those seeking work and those for anyone who can offer work.

We urge both groups to take advantage of this free opportunity (you don’t have to be a member of WOW to use this service) so Web professionals can start supporting themselves and their families once again.

A Survivor’s Story

Jason Hebert is a WOW member. He and his wife survived Hurricane Katrina, but all his clients are gone. He is looking for Web development work. His story, which also can be found in the WOW Forum, http://www.webprofessionals.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=220&PN=1, is presented here in his own words:

Hurricane Katrina came through this area with a fury no one has seen before. The pictures you see on the news don't tell the whole story. It's only when you can step into the area and see first-hand the amount and type of destruction that occurred can you understand the impact to the area.

Web mulls Google's threat to Microsoft

From CNET News.com

Debate is growing over whether Google poses a viable threat to Microsoft's dominance of the personal-computing sector.

Web logs and discussion forums lit up over the weekend with talk of how computing may evolve in the near future, and whether a shift toward using the Web as a primary computing platform could leave companies like Microsoft to go the way of the dinosaur.

The possibility of such a drastic transformation is nothing new to the software giant: Memos dating as far back as 1995 reveal company executives' concern that the Web could become the next platform and that if Microsoft didn't push innovation on that front, it could lose its hold on market. Now, with Google's umbrella of services widening, some industry watchers have begun to wonder whether that day is on the horizon.

Did you say dogging or blogging? Brits confused

From Yahoo! News

LONDON (Reuters) - Proponents of the latest Web trends were warned on Tuesday that the rest of the world may not have a clue what they are talking about.
A survey of British taxi drivers, pub landlords and hairdressers -- often seen as barometers of popular trends -- found that nearly 90 percent had no idea what a podcast is and more than 70 percent had never heard of blogging.

"When I asked the panel whether people were talking about blogging, they thought I meant dogging," said Sarah Carter, the planning director at ad firm DDB London.

Dogging is the phenomenon of watching couples have sex in semi-secluded places such as out-of-town car parks. News of such events are often spread on Web sites or by using mobile phone text messages.
